A Safe and Supportive Space for Individual Counselling and Therapy
Welcome, and thank you for visiting Helen Rust Counselling.
Hi, I’m Helen, passionate about helping you find a way forward when things are tough. I can offer you warmth and acceptance in a calm, private and non-judgemental space to help you feel like yourself again.
I’ve spent my thirty plus years of working life being passionate about developing my understanding of people and helping people to understand themselves. I have been described as warm, gentle and kind, with an ability to listen attentively and piece things together to help make connections. I can sit with you in the darkest of times. It is a rewarding and privileged experience to be there for my clients.

I work for myself with most clients coming to me directly, but I also take clients through company schemes and private healthcare. Currently you can access me through Onebright Healthcare (providing services for Aviva, AXA, Bupa and WPA) plus the employee schemes supplied through CIC and Health Hero. I’m registered directly with Vitality, WPA and Aviva. I trained with and spent 3 years working for Rape Crisis and am experienced in working with events that happened many years ago and those that have happened more recently. I'm experienced in helping with relationships, anxiety, depression, ADHD and neurodiversity, menopause, work issues, bereavement, trauma, domestic abuse, sexual violence and abuse, low self-esteem, identity and coping with illness.
I’m a member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Association and have reached their level of Professional Accredited Registrant PNCPS (Acc). This means I have reached a level of client experience and competency that meets a national framework for the profession.
People come to me for help with a wide range of issues. Here are some of the challenges I’m experienced in working with:
Relationships
Anxiety
Depression
ADHD and neurodiversity
Menopause
Work-related issues
Bereavement
Trauma
Domestic abuse
Sexual violence and abuse
Low self-esteem
Identity
Coping with illness
Counselling provides a space that’s just for you. It’s a chance to stop, think and be truly listened to. I don’t know the people in your life, I’m not emotionally involved, so this enables you to have a sense of total freedom in being able to talk. I’m not here to judge in any way, simply to listen and help you find your way through what’s happening to you. I will offer insights and examples to help you make sense of things, and sometimes I may suggest things to help between sessions.
If you are trying to cope with a bereavement or illness, you may be worrying about talking to the people close to you and burdening them. You may have lost the person you would usually talk to. I can be alongside you at these difficult times so you do not feel alone.
Counselling can help you explore different parts of your life and how the things that have happened to you over time have impacted you. Sometimes we may want to spend time being curious about your childhood and the past. This can help you understand your behaviour and relationship patterns, and how these are showing up now. We may also explore your current and past friendships and relationships to allow you to identify what’s important to you and any changes you wish to make.
Maybe you’re trying to decide whether to stay in a relationship or trying to find your way forward after leaving one. You can think out loud and together we will go step by step as you make decisions and find your way forward.
If you have been through traumatic experiences, we will find a way to carefully explore these to help you to recover from them. Trauma impacts your body and your emotions, and often these can be held on to for many years. When we experience difficult things such as sexual or domestic abuse, we may feel ashamed and unable to talk to anyone. We are often able to put these away in a box and continue with our lives, but we’re aware that the box is there. Sometimes an experience in the present opens the box and we become aware that the trauma is still affecting us. Having a private and confidential space can help us work with the contents of the box and move towards putting them into the past instead of the trauma invading your present.
The first step is for us to have a chat either on the phone or on Zoom. There is no charge for this, and it usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. This allows me to find out about what help you are looking for, and for you to see how it feels talking to me and ask any questions you would like to. For counselling to help, it’s important that you feel that I’m the right person for you. There’s no pressure from me; the choice and control will always sit with you.
On a practical basis I recommend working weekly if possible. This allows us to build a safe and trusting relationship so you feel in the flow of the work. I appreciate finances can be tight so I’m happy to work at a frequency that fits with you. I will try to find a regular time slot that works for you, but I can also work flexibly if you need this. Sessions last for 50 minutes.
Session fees are £50 per 50-minute session. Please feel free to get in touch to discuss current availability.
